To let your seedlings grow as best as you can please make sure you keep the following tips in mind after you receive your plants by mail:
Soil and watering
After you have unpacked your cactus or succulent seedlings you should transplant them immediately in a dry cactus and succulent soil. I prefer to use the mix below for most of my cacti and succulents:
- 1 part clay
- 2 parts fine grit (1-3 mm)
- 1 part larger grit (4-8 mm)
- 1 part regular potting soil
- 3 parts coarse sand
Try and sift out the pieces of peat in the potting soil. They tend to lower the pH to much.
Light and temperature
After transplanting the seedlings put them on a shady position in your house or greenhouse for 3-4 days. The seedlings have been in a box for some time and must re-adjust to the light. Cactus and succulent seedlings usually do not prefer direct sunlight so make sure that you place them on a bright location. However reduce the light if your seedlings turn red. This is a stress indicator (it could also mean your plants are to dry).
Good luck growing your cactus and succulent seedlings!
